DDMIX for Schools and Professor Amanda Daley

A diverse and fun dance fitness programme for schools created by Dame Darcey Bussell with an aim to get all kids moving, improving children’s health and wellbeing.

Founded by Dame Darcey Bussell and advised by Professor Amanda Daley, DDMIX for Schools is a programme of dance-fitness sessions for schoolchildren. It celebrates diversity, is completely inclusive and non-competitive, has elements of creativity and can be done in any space. It is also a highly adaptable programme that suits all children of every age and ability. The sessions feature a diverse range of music and dance styles with over 30 different genres, helping children to expand their cultural horizons and explore their own creativity. Amanda Daley is a professor of behavioural medicine at Loughborough University and the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine, Loughborough. Her work is focused on investigating the effects of physical activity and weight-management interventions on the health of adults and young people in the community, particularly in relation to obesity and mental health. Today’s showcase will explore further the role dance-based activities can play in reducing childhood obesity and improving children’s health and wellbeing. Following a performance of a typical session, Darcey will discuss the genesis of DDMIX before being joined by Professor Daley. Together they will address the challenges of childhood obesity and argue the case for health commissioners to engage with the initiative, as well as exploring how adding dance fitness to the national curriculum can give all children the opportunity of a physically healthy future.
