House of Memories

A museum-led dementia awareness programme, which offers training and activities to enable carers to provide person-centred care for people living with dementia.

Created by National Museums Liverpool in 2012, House of Memories  has provided more than 12,000 carers with resources to support people  to live well with dementia. National and international award-winning House of Memories has been referenced within leading policy documents, including the UK Prime Minister’s Challenge on Dementia (Department  of Health, 2012), and the review of care standards for people living with dementia (Care Quality Commission, 2014). House of Memories was cited as a creative intervention that focuses positively upon the individual’s quality of life. House of Memories has been designed to provide understanding of how information about a person’s history and life experience can be a valuable tool for positive communication. Activities include an interactive training day, access to a free object loan service and a memory app. Extensive consultation is carried out involving people with dementia and their families and carers. Local, national and international partners include commissioning groups, government departments, local authorities, cultural partners, NHS trusts and community health and carer networks. Crossing Boundaries: The Value of Museums in Dementia Care is a research programme, which evaluates House of Memories through a longitudinal, mixed-method and large-scale empirical case study. Findings highlight the potential of House of Memories to be scalable nationally  and internationally; improve informal carers’ dementia awareness and subjective wellbeing; improve professional carers’ dementia core skills; and create positive social return on investment ratios.
