What we do
Melodies for Mums is a new programme of weekly singing workshops, delivered over ten weeks for mums who show symptoms of postnatal depression, persistent low mood, fatigue, insomnia, stress and anxiety about the new birth. Postnatal depression (PND) has been shown to affect up to 13% of new mothers and is thought to be higher. The long-term effects can have a huge impact on not just the mother but also the child, partner and the wider social circle.
The programme is delivered by Breathe Arts Health Research and works with local communities and health and social professionals, such as health visitors, community midwives and children’s centres, to deliver weekly singing workshops for groups of up to 14 mums at a time. Led by a highly skilled team, the sessions offer structure, peer support, bonding, a creative outlet using simple singing and music-making and is free for participants. The workshops provide a viable alternative to traditional methods of support, such as talking therapies or pharmacological prescribing, both of which can present problems for these women.
The programme is based on groundbreaking scientific research carried out by the Royal College of Music and Imperial College. The study combined both biological and psychological data and demonstrated a 41% reduction of symptoms of PND and a recovery rate of up to 73% of those taking part in such a programme.
